OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 14-ranked Johnson County men's soccer team stretched its winning and shutout streak to three matches with a 5-0 victory over North Iowa Area on Friday night and a 1-0 win against No. 3 Iowa Lakes on Sunday afternoon at the JCCC Soccer Complex.
Against North Iowa Area, the Cavaliers wasted little time creating offensive chances, building a 3-0 advantage in the first 25 minutes. Freshman forward Sergio Hernandez Marquez (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission West HS) scored twice, while sophomore forward Tanner Poirier (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill HS) added another just 22 seconds after Hernandez Marquez's second goal.
Hernandez Marquez struck first in the 14th minute off a pass from sophomore midfielder Ben Points (Ogden, Utah/Ogden HS). Ten minutes later, he doubled the lead with an unassisted goal. Poirier quickly made it 3-0 at the 24:49 mark.
Early in the second half, JCCC added two more tallies. Sophomore Michael Bernabe (Bucyrus, Kan./Blue Valley Southwest HS) scored in the 46th minute with Points registering his second assist of the match, and sophomore transfer forward Tyler Beckford (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands/Hesston College) netted his first goal as a Cavalier in the 50th minute.
Freshman goalkeeper Daniel Wozniak (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West HS) earned his first collegiate shutout, stopping all three shots he faced.
Two days later, Wozniak was again the difference in a 1-0 victory over No. 3 Iowa Lakes. He recorded 10 saves, including eight in the second half, to secure his second straight shutout and third straight victory.
The match's only goal came in the 47th minute when freshman midfielder Khoi Woods (Olathe, Kan./Olathe North HS)fired a shot that deflected off a Lakers defender and rolled into the net. Despite being outshot 14-6 in the second half, the Cavaliers held on behind Wozniak's stellar play.
