The photo shows an awards?ceremony moment on a stage featuring the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) backdrop. Two individuals in formal attire are standing at the center, shaking hands as one of them receives a recognition plaque. Both are dressed in suits—one wearing a dark suit with a patterned tie and lapel pins, and the other in a navy suit holding the award. Behind them is a large CoSIDA banner highlighting the organization’s role in collegiate athletics communications. To the side of the stage are upholstered chairs, suggesting this is part of a larger program or banquet. The lighting and setting create a professional, celebratory atmosphere typical of a national awards presentation.

Tyler Cundith
Sports Information Director

In his 35th year at Johnson County Community College—and 34th as sports information director—Tyler Cundith coordinates all media relations for the athletic department’s seven sports. He is the first full-time sports information director in the history of the college.

During his tenure, Cundith has overseen publicity for 13 national championship teams, 103 teams that finished in the top five nationally, 127 Region/District champions, 159 conference champions, and more than 1,000 individual All-Americans.

Cundith was inducted into the JCCC Athletics Hall of Fame on Feb. 16, 2008. In April 2016, he received the NJCAA Service Award, the association’s most tenured honor, recognizing individuals who have made significant long-term contributions to two-year college athletics at the national level. He was presented with his 25-year award from College Sports Communicators (CSC, formerly CoSIDA) in June 2017 and earned the CSC President’s Award in June 2018 for exemplary volunteer service and leadership.

A longtime leader within CSC, Cundith served 21 years on the Publications Committee, including terms as Vice Chair (2009–12) and Chair (2012–18). He was elected in 2015 to a prestigious three-year term on the CSC Board of Directors, becoming the first two-year college representative to serve in that role. He also helped found 2YSIDA, the organization for two-year sports information professionals, serving two years as president. Additionally, he served on the CSC College Division Management Advisory Committee and, in 2019, was appointed to the CSC Governance Review Committee.

Cundith has earned 301 national awards for publications and writing, including 282 from CSC. His work includes 129 publications recognized as “Best in the Nation” (124 by CSC), 4 by NJCAA, 1 by Intercollegiate Tennis Association), along with 33 covers selected as the nation’s best. He has finished among the top five nationally in total awards 18 times and has led or tied for the national lead six times.

In 2002-03, Cundith led the country with 17 awards, ahead of Texas and Nebraska (15), Maryland (14) and Notre Dame and Texas A&M (13).  He again led the nation in 2010-11 with 11 publication honors, three more than Oklahoma and LSU. He made it two straight years in 2011-12, leading the country with eight national awards, and in 2012-13 he tied for the nation’s lead with LSU and Washburn with nine total awards. In 2017-18 Cundith was tops the nation for a fifth time, leading with 15 total awards ahead of Kentucky (12), Kansas, West Virginia, Slippery Rock and Washburn (11).  In 2003-04, he was awarded a career-best 19 awards, including 10 “Best in the Nation” honors, second nationally to Nebraska.

Beyond his media relations duties, Cundith serves as chair of the JCCC Athletic Hall of Fame and has worked as media coordinator for seven NJCAA national championship events (4 women’s basketball, 3 half marathon), along with numerous regional tournaments.

He also taught golf and coordinated JCCC’s summer youth golf camps from 1991 to 2014. In the summer of 1999, Cundith recorded a rare 488-yard hole-in-one on a par-5 at Oak Country Golf Club in De Soto—just eight yards shy of the world record. The feat was named “Ace of the Year” by Golf Magazine and earned him recognition in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd.”

Cundith’s professional experience includes roles with the Kansas City Attack (public relations director), Kansas City Brass (media relations director), and the Kansas City Chiefs (ticket operations). In 1995, he worked for ESPN as a researcher and spotter for the NPSL All-Star Game. He also served on the media relations staff for the first and second rounds of the 1997 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. His writing credits include work with Sun Publications, the Major Indoor Lacrosse League, Kansas City Golf and Travel Magazine, and the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.

A 1987 graduate of the University of Kansas with a bachelor’s degree in communications, Cundith earned his master’s degree in education/sports administration from Wichita State University in 1990.
