OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 2-ranked Johnson County women's soccer team kept its perfect season intact with a pair of shutout victories in Pensacola, Fla., over the weekend.
The Cavaliers now sit at 4-0-0 and have blanked each of their last three opponents, surrendering just one goal in the season opener. Last season, JCCC set a program record with 15 consecutive shutouts on their way to a single-season mark of 18.
On Friday night, Johnson County defeated host Pensacola State College, 3-0, before capping their Florida trip with a 1-0 win over Mississippi Gulf Coast, a team receiving votes in the first regular season poll.
Against Pensacola State, sophomore forward Jill Lenherr (Gardner, Kan./Gardner-Edgerton HS) opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with her third goal of the year, assisted by sophomore midfielder Tatum Bresette (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit HS). Bresette then doubled the lead in the 53rd minute, tallying her second goal of the season off a feed from freshman midfielder Iliana Garcia (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission North HS), her second assist of the year. Freshman forward Ella Hammonds (San Antonio, Texas/Sandra Day O'Connor HS) sealed the victory in the 70th minute, finishing a perfect pass from sophomore forward Riggs Kuhn (McPherson, Kan./McPherson HS).
In Sunday's match against Mississippi Gulf Coast, both sides applied steady pressure, but the breakthrough came in the 34th minute when sophomore midfielder Brecken Hoy (Wichita, Kan./Bishop Carroll Catholic HS) buried her third goal of the season and second game-winner. Freshman forward Darby Howard (Wichita, Kan./Bishop Carroll Catholic HS) picked up her third assist of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Avery Young (Spring Hill, Kan./Spring Hill HS) was outstanding between the posts, stopping all 15 shots she faced across the two matches. She recorded 13 saves against Mississippi Gulf Coast, a total that ties for the eighth-most in a single match in program history.
The Cavaliers return to action this week with two matches. On Wednesday, Sept. 10, they host Allen Community College in their conference opener at 5 p.m., then travel to Missouri on Saturday, Sept. 13, to take on St. Louis Community College.
