OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 2-ranked Johnson County Community College women's soccer team erupted for three goals in each half to cruise to a 6-1 conference victory over Pratt on Saturday afternoon at the JCCC Soccer Complex.
The Cavaliers wasted little time, as sophomore midfielder Brecken Hoy set up freshman forward Darby Howard just four minutes in for the opener. Hoy later converted a penalty kick in the 31st minute to push the lead to 3-0 after sophomore forward Riggs Kuhn scored her first goal of the season off a setup from classmate Samantha Pond, her first assist of the year. Kuhn's goal would prove to be the game-winner.
Howard struck again early in the second half, forcing a turnover at midfield before racing in and finishing to the top corner for her first multi-goal game of the season. Freshman defender Madison Smith then assisted sophomore midfielder Tatum Bresette's third goal of the year to make it 5-0.
Pratt broke through in the 63rd minute on a penalty kick after a foul in the box, ending JCCC's shutout streak at seven games. Backup goalkeeper Lena-Marie Winkler, who had replaced starter Avery Young a minute earlier, made three saves the rest of the way to hold the Beavers in check.
Pond capped the scoring in the 72nd minute with her first goal of the season, assisted by freshman defender Sophia Rine, also her first point of the year.
Young finished with two saves in 62 minutes, extending her personal shutout streak to 596 minutes, 4 seconds before exiting.
Johnson County (9-0-0) continues its road swing Wednesday at Southeast in Lincoln, Neb., before returning home Saturday, Sept. 27, for a showdown with cross-town rival and No. 11-ranked Kansas City Kansas. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
