OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Facing the fourth-best offense in NJCAA Division II, the No. 2-ranked Johnson County Community College women's soccer team relied on its No. 1-ranked defense to pull out a 3-1 victory at St. Charles Wednesday evening, handing the Cougars their first setback of the season.

St. Charles struck first in the 26th minute to take a 1-0 lead. It was the first goal allowed by sophomore goalkeeper Avery Young since the season opener, snapping her consecutive shutout streak at 709 minutes, 40 seconds.

The Cougars carried their one-goal advantage into the second half until the 51st minute, when sophomore midfielder Carmen Duarte connected with freshman forward Ella Hammonds for the equalizer, her third goal of the season.

Ten minutes later, the Cavaliers grabbed the lead on a strike from sophomore forward Samantha Pond, her third goal in the last four matches. Sophomore forward Lily Marshall provided the assist.

Marshall then put the match out of reach in the 78th minute, netting her third goal of the year off another setup from Duarte, who finished with two assists.

Young tallied six saves to improve her record to 10-0-0, while the Cavaliers moved to 11-0-0 on the season.

Johnson County returns to action Saturday, Oct. 4, when they travel to Iola, Kan., for a Kansas Jayhawk Conference Division II matchup against Allen Community College.
