The photo shows a women’s soccer sideline during a match on a sunny day. A coach stands near the touchline with arms slightly extended, appearing to communicate or gesture toward the field. In front of him, a player in a white uniform with the number 3 walks away from the sideline.Behind them, several teammates sit in foldable chairs, some wearing training bibs and others in casual warm?up gear. Players are drinking water, talking, or watching the action on the field. Water coolers, bags, and other team equipment are arranged along the bench area. The background features a grassy hill and a black chain?link fence, giving the scene a typical outdoor collegiate soccer setting.

When it comes to building a foundation for sustained success, Johnson County Community College has found its master architect in head women’s soccer coach Jim Schwab. Across every level of the game—player or coach, indoor or outdoor, professional or collegiate—Schwab’s career has been defined by one constant: winning.

Since becoming the program’s first women’s head coach in 1999, Schwab has built JCCC into one of the premier programs in NJCAA Division II women’s soccer. Entering his 28th season, he owns a remarkable 408-125-26 record, the most wins among active NJCAA coaches and second-most all-time. His teams have produced 24 double-digit win seasons, including 13 campaigns with 17 or more victories.

Schwab has guided the Lady Cavaliers to 11 Region 6 titles, eight conference championships, and two district crowns. His teams have reached the Region 6 Final Four in 23 of 27 seasons and have consistently been ranked nationally, appearing in more than half of all NJCAA polls during his tenure.

On the national stage, Schwab has led JCCC to multiple historic runs. The program’s first NJCAA Tournament appearance came in 2009, where the Cavaliers finished national runner-up. More recently, JCCC returned to the national championship match in 2023 and again in 2024, highlighting a dominant stretch that has included conference, region, and district titles, as well as a No. 1 national ranking. In 2025, the Cavaliers posted a program-record 21 wins and earned the top seed in the NJCAA Tournament.

Schwab’s teams have been equally dominant defensively and offensively. His 2024 and 2025 squads ranked among the nation’s best in goals against average and shutouts, including an NJCAA Division II record 15 consecutive shutouts. Offensively, his teams have regularly ranked among national leaders in goals, assists, and total points.

Individually, Schwab has coached 22 NJCAA All-Americans, nine United Soccer Coaches All-Americans, and more than 120 All-Region VI selections. His players have also excelled in the classroom, earning 87 NJCAA Academic honors, including 20 perfect 4.0 GPAs. Additionally, 88 student-athletes have advanced to four-year programs.

Schwab’s excellence has been widely recognized. He is an 11-time Region 6 Coach of the Year and has earned multiple conference Coach of the Year honors, including back-to-back selections in 2024 and 2025. In 2024, Schwab and his staff were named the NJCAA Division II National Coaching Staff of the Year by United Soccer Coaches.

Before leading the women’s program, Schwab built a powerhouse on the men’s side at JCCC, compiling a 156-45-6 record in 10 seasons. He led the men’s team to five Region 6 titles and remains the program’s all-time leader in wins and winning percentage. He is the only Cavaliers coach to post a 20-win season, leading JCCC toa 21-1 mark in 1992. In 1994, he led the Cavaliers to their first NJCAA Tournament appearance. As the men’s coach, Schwab coached six All-American and 38 All-Region 6 performers. He also had 10 former players either drafted or signed to professional contracts. One, Shawn Beyer, was named to the NPSL All-Rookie team in 1998.

A former professional player with the Kansas City Attack, Schwab was a 1985 draft choice of the Kansas City Comets. He had two stints with the Comets playing four seasons, one with the Hershey Impact and seven seasons with the Kansas City Attack, where he helped lead the team to two National Professional Soccer League championships, one a player and one as a player/coach. Schwab retired in 1998 as the Attack’s most decorated defender and one of the premier shot blockers in the NPSL. He ranked as the team’s all-time shot blocker and was ranked in the top-10 for assists and two-point goals.

Schwab was a collegiate standout player at Florissant Valley Community College in St. Louis and was a member of the United States Junior National Team.

Schwab has three sons, Luke, Davis and Jack. Davis, played for the Johnson County baseball program and Missouri State University, and was drafted in the 37th round in the 2019 Major League Draft by the Atlanta Braves. Jack is a member of the 2026 JCCC baseball team.
