JCCC remains in first place with sweeps over Allen and Fort Scott

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 13-ranked Johnson County softball team remained on top of the Kansas Jayhawk Conference D-II, Division A standings with two-game sweeps over Allen and Fort Scott last week. The Lady Cavaliers downed Allen 2-0 and 12-4 on Tuesday, April 12, and two days later posted wins of 3-1 and 10-2 over the Greyhounds.  JCCC stands 16-4 in the conference standings, just ahead of Labette at 13-5, and are 22-10 overall. 

In the opener against Allen, Johnson County only need two runs thanks to a dominating effort in the circle by sophomore right-hander Kaylin Watkins. She allowed just one single and struck out eight batters to earn the complete-game shutout.

Shortstop Macey Nigh and outfielder Emma Martin each got a hit and scored in the bottom of the third to give the Lady Cavaliers a 2-0 lead. 

In the second game, five players produced multiple-hit efforts highlighted by catcher Maddy Morrison. She had a single and a double, scored twice and drove in a career-high five runs.  Gaige Pinkerton, Malia Gutierrez, Nigh and Allee Brattin were the other four players to college two hits in the game. 

Like the series with Allen, JCCC opened the Fort Scott series backed by a strong pitching performance by right-hander Jordan Harrison. She allowed just one run off five hits and struck out seven batters to earn eighth to improve to 8-2 on the season 

In the final game against the Greyhounds, Johnson Count plated six runs in the top of the second inning to take a lead they would not relinquish.

Nigh and outfielder Jordan Diehl were the leaders at the plate. Nigh had a single and a triple. Scored twice and drove in three runs.  Diehl also ripped a single and a triple, scored three times and drove in two. 

Johnson County has a big series coming up this week at home against No. 20 Cowley College on Thursday, April 21. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. The Tigers are in second place in the D-II, Division B standings with a 16-4 conference mark and stand 26-10 overall.
