JCCC Storms Back in Seventh, Advances to Region 6 Championship Game

A group of softball players in white and navy uniforms and navy visors labeled “JOHNSON” stand in a close huddle on a green turf field. Several players have their arms raised toward the center with hands stacked or pointing upward. A white soccer goal and a chain-link fence sit behind the group, with trees and a scoreboard visible in the distance under daylight.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – For the second time in the Region 6 Tournament, Johnson County Community College delivered late-game magic.

Trailing by three runs entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the Cavaliers erupted for four runs, capped by a walk-off victory over Cowley Friday afternoon at JCCC Softball Field to punch their ticket to the Region 6 Tournament championship game. JCCC improved to 36-11 with the dramatic 6-5 win.

The comeback marked the Cavaliers' second walk-off win of the tournament after their opening-round victory over Coffeyville earlier in the week.

Cowley appeared in control after building a 5-2 lead heading into the final frame. The Tigers scored once in the first inning, added three runs in the fourth and another in the seventh behind a solo home run from Carsen Carpenter.

JCCC chipped away throughout the game. Kennedy Glassford tied the game 1-1 in the second inning with a solo home run, her team-leading blast of the season, and the Cavaliers added another run in the sixth to pull within 4-2.

Down to their final three outs in the seventh, the Cavaliers mounted their biggest rally of the postseason.

Glassford opened the inning with a solo home run to cut the deficit to 5-3 and ignite the comeback. Later in the frame, Mariah Herrera came through with a clutch two-run double to left-center field, scoring two runners to tie the game at 5-5. Moments later, Alaryce Millard completed the rally by driving a double to center field that scored Herrera from second base for the walk-off winner, sending the Cavaliers pouring out of the dugout in celebration.

JCCC finished with 14 hits in the contest. Millard paced the offense by going 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, while Glassford, Neitzel and Yoder each recorded two hits. Herrera scored twice and drove in two runs.

In the circle, Elsa Carrillo was outstanding in relief, allowing just one run over the final 3.1 innings to earn her 13th victory of the season. She struck out two and limited Cowley to just two hits after entering in the fourth inning.

The Cavaliers now advance to the Region 6 Tournament championship game looking to continue their postseason run and secure a berth in the NJCAA National Tournament.
