OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College softball team is headed to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II World Series, receiving an at-large bid by the NJCAA Tuesday afternoon. The World Series runs May 20-23 at Tyger River Park in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
The Lady Cavaliers softball team become the third JCCC sports team in program history to receive an at-large bid to compete in a national tournament. The women's basketball team was an at-large entry to the 2021 tournament, and last fall the women's soccer team received an at-large bid to fill out the field at the D-II national tournament. The teams turned that opportunity into a successful run, with both finishing runner-up in their respective national tournaments.
This is Johnson County's 21st appearance in the NJCAA World Series, their ninth at Division II and fifth trip under head coach Aubree Brattin Volkens. The Lady Cavaliers have produced 12 top-five finishes including a runner-up finish in 2007 and third place finish in 2015.
Johnson County was awarded the No. 10 seed in the 20-team tournament field and will take on No. 7 seed Phoenix College to open the tournament. The Bears will be making their 22nd trip to the World Series with 21 at the D-II level. Phoenix has captured 10 national championships over that span, including five consecutively from 2004-08 and most recently in 2022. They defeated JCCC to win the title in 2007.
