No. 11 JCCC softball splits doubleheader with No. 20 North Iowa Area.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 11-ranked Johnson County Community College softball team split a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader with No. 20 North Iowa Area Community College. The Cavaliers dropped the opener 7-1 before bouncing back to claim a 6-5 victory in the second game.

In the first game, North Iowa Area's top three hitters in the lineup combined for eight hits, five runs, four RBI and three stolen bases. Trojans pitcher Chloe Thurlby scattered six hits and allowed just one run over seven innings while striking out six.

Johnson County was led offensively by Olivia Ellis and Reese Pattison, who each collected two hits. Ellis drove in the Cavaliers' lone run with a single down the right field line in the bottom of the second inning.

Kyleigh Whitehorse worked all seven innings in the circle for JCCC. The freshman right-hander allowed 10 hits and seven runs, four earned, while striking out a season-high eight batters.

In the second game Johnson County scored two runs in the first, second and fourth innings to hold off the Trojans for a 6-5 victory.

Shalynn Elmore made the most of her opportunity in the starting lineup. The freshman outfielder went 3-for-4 at the plate, scored two runs, drove in two runs and stole two bases, all season highs.

Reagan Neitzel drove in a team-high three runs, while Reese Pattison added two RBI.

Elsa Carrillo started in the circle for JCCC and allowed one hit and two runs over one and one-third innings. Alaryce Millard came on in relief and pitched the final five and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out four and walking four.

The Cavaliers return to the diamond on Friday, March 13, when they host No. 4-ranked Kirkwood for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
