Johnson County Takes Two from St. Louis with Balanced Attack

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Johnson County Community College used dominant pitching and timely offense to sweep a doubleheader from St. Louis Community College on Sunday at Overland Park, winning 6-4 in the opener before completing the sweep with a 6-3 victory in the second game.

In game one, the Cavaliers rallied from an early deficit with a pivotal middle-inning surge. St. Louis jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added runs in the sixth and seventh, but JCCC answered in the fourth with a four-run outburst to take control. Reagan Neitzel delivered a key two-run hit in the inning, while Katie Courter finished with three RBI to lead the offense.

Johnson County added two more runs in the fifth to extend its lead to 6-2. Alaryce Millard paced the Cavaliers with two hits and two runs scored, while Makenzie Yoder added a pair of hits, an RBI and a stolen base.

Despite St. Louis piling up 13 hits, JCCC starter Kyleigh Whitehurst limited the damage, allowing four runs (three earned) over seven innings to earn the complete-game victory.

In game two, the Cavaliers wasted no time seizing control, scoring three runs in each of the first two innings to build a 6-0 advantage they would not relinquish. Kennedy Glassford led the charge, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Courter stayed hot with a 3-for-3 performance that included two doubles.

Yoder added a triple and scored a run, and Mariah Herrera chipped in two hits as JCCC totaled 11 hits in the contest.

St. Louis responded with two runs in the third and one in the sixth, but could not overcome the early deficit.

Elsa Carrillo was steady in the circle for Johnson County, tossing a complete game while allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts and just one walk.

For the day, Johnson County combined strong starting pitching with explosive early offense in both games, controlling the doubleheader from start to finish to secure the sweep.
