OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Johnson County Community College continued its dominant run through KJCCC Division II play Saturday, sweeping Kansas City Kansas Community College in a doubleheader to extend its winning streak to 12 games and take sole possession of first place in the league standings.
The Cavaliers edged KCKCC 6–4 in the opener before outlasting the Blue Devils 9–8 in a back-and-forth nightcap, using timely power hitting and steady pitching to complete the road sweep.
JCCC used a balanced offensive attack and a strong complete-game effort in the circle from Kyleigh Whitehurst to claim the opener.
The Cavaliers jumped out early, with Kennedy Glassford and Katie Kolarik each launching home runs to provide key run support. Glassford finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Kolarik added a two-run homer of her own. Reagan Neitzel and Reese Pattison also drove in runs as JCCC totaled 12 hits in the contest.
Kansas City Kansas answered with three runs in the first inning and added another later, but Whitehurst settled in and kept the Blue Devils in check the rest of the way. She went the distance, allowing four runs (three earned) while striking out four to earn the win.
The nightcap featured plenty of drama, as the Cavaliers built a lead, watched it disappear, and then held off KCKCC for the one-run victory.
Katie Kolarik delivered the biggest offensive performance of the day, going 2-for-2 with two home runs, including a grand slam, and six RBIs. Her power surge proved to be the difference, accounting for more than half of JCCC's scoring. Makenzie Yoder added a triple and two RBIs, while Olivia Ellis scored twice from the lower half of the order.
In the circle, Elsa Carrillo picked up the win after working five innings, and Whitehurst returned in relief to help close out the final frames as KCKCC mounted a late comeback attempt.
Despite eight runs from the Blue Devils, JCCC's offense stayed aggressive and answered scoring threats throughout the game to secure the sweep.
With the two wins, Johnson County improved its winning streak to 12 consecutive games and moved into sole possession of first place in the KJCCC Division II standings. The Cavaliers used a combination of power hitting, depth throughout the lineup, and reliable pitching across both games to continue their surge at the top of the conference race.
JCCC will look to keep its momentum rolling as it returns to conference action later this week.
