OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College left no doubt in its title run, overwhelming Independence in a doubleheaders sweep to secure its fourth Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Division II regular season championship in five years, while Katie Kolarik and Kyleigh Whitehurst captured the conference's final Player and Pitcher of the Week honors.
The Cavaliers rolled to a 13-0 win in the opener before erupting for a 23-4 victory in the nightcap to clinch the conference title in emphatic fashion.
Kolarik led the charge at the plate with a monster day. In the opener, she went 3-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and three runs scored. She followed with one of the most explosive innings of the season in game two, blasting a grand slam and a three-run home run in the first inning. Kolarik finished the second game 3-for-5 with seven RBIs, capping a dominant performance that fueled the Cavaliers' offensive outburst. Across the doubleheader, she went 6-for-8 with two doubles, two home runs, five runs scored and eight RBIs.
In the circle, Whitehurst was nearly untouchable. The freshman right-hander struck out eight and allowed just one hit over five shutout innings to secure the win in the opener. With the victory, she improved to 17-4 on the season while pushing her strikeout total to 102.
