JCCC softball splits series with St. Louis

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 17-ranked Johnson County softball team managed to get a split in the double header against St. Louis Community College Tuesday afternoon at the JCCC Softball Complex.  The Archers took the first game 4-3, but the Lady Cavaliers rebounded with 5-0 shutout in the second game. 

In the opener, JCCC scored a run in the bottom of the first for an early lead, but St. Louis plated four runs in the fourth to take a three-run advantage.  Johnson County made it interesting with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but were not able to get the tying run across. 

Freshman Kaylin Watkins homered for a third straight game, upping her team lead to 11. She also had an RBI double It. It was the fourth straight game hitting a double.  Freshman Aubrey Griffith also drove in a run with a double. 

Freshman right-hander AJ Elleman suffered her fourth loss of the season. She allowed four runs off eight hits, and struck out three batters. 

In the second game, freshman Emma Martin had a two-run single and two-run homer to drive in four of the Lady Cavaliers five runs.  Her four RBI match a season high against Cloud County, and the home run was the first of the season. 

Griffith accounted for the fifth run with a triple. She also had a single in the game for her seventh multi-hit game of the season. 

Freshman right-hander Morgan Lindsay notched her third victory, and her first shutout of the season. She allowed just two hits and struck out three. 

Johnson County has three conference double headers left on their schedule before postseason play begins.  They travel to Hesston (19-13) Thursday, April 29, then host Labette (24-12) on Saturday, May 1 and close out the season at Kansas City Kansas (37-9) Saturday May 8. 

The Lady Cavaliers are still in the hunt for a conference title. JCCC is currently 17-5 in conference play, second behind Labette at 15-3. KCKCC is in third place at 16-6. These six games will have a big impact on the conference championship and seeding for the Region VI Tournament.
