OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College volleyball team will start the 2020-21 campaign as the No. 11 team in the country. The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) released its Division II preseason poll this week. This is the 11th time in 13 years under the director of head coach Jennifer Ei that her program has opened a season ranked.
Additionally, the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference released its annual preseason volleyball poll for the upcoming season, and Johnson County has been picked to win in the Kansas Jayhawk Division II Conference title in 2020-21. The Lady Cavaliers nudged out Cowley College for the top spot, followed by Highland Community College. Cloud County Community College and Kansas City Kansas Community College round out the top five.
While regionally the Lady Cavaliers have been touted as the team to beat, the national view by the NJCAA is much different. Coffeyville Community College was given the No. 2 spot in the national poll, followed by Cowley at No. 3. Highland came in one spot behind JCCC at No. 13, and Cloud County and Kansas City Kansas made the top-25, coming in a 21st and 24th respectively.
Last season, the Lady Cavaliers posted a 25-10 record and ended the season ranked 10th nationally. Ei returns six players from that squad, and one from the 2018 team that place third in the nation. Ei enters her 13th season having compiled a 324-115 (.738) record, and eight NJCAA Tournament appearances, with runner-up finishes in 2008 and 2010.
