Cavaliers rally past Cowley in five sets to clinch Plains District B title and National Tournament berth

The photo shows a volleyball team posing indoors against a black padded wall with a white brick section above it. The players are wearing matching navy blue uniforms with “JOHNSON” printed across the chest in white letters, along with numbers in white and gold. Most of the uniforms have long sleeves with yellow and white stripes near the elbows, while one player in the center is wearing a bright yellow jersey, likely indicating the libero position.
The team is gathered closely together, kneeling and standing in two rows. The player in the yellow jersey is holding a large wooden plaque with a gold emblem and text that reads “NJCAA” at the top and “DISTRICT CHAMPION” along with additional details below. The plaque is shield-shaped and prominently displayed in the center of the group. The floor appears to be a gymnasium surface, and the overall setting suggests a celebratory moment after winning a championship.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The Johnson County Community College volleyball team punched its ticket to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament for the 22nd time in program history, rallying for a thrilling five-set victory (22-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-23, 15-13) over Cowley College Sunday afternoon in Arkansas City.

With the win, the Cavaliers secured the NJCAA Plains District B Championship — the 14th under head coach Jennifer Ei.

In a showdown of top-ranked teams, No. 4 Cowley looked poised to defend its national title after taking the first two sets from the sixth-ranked Cavaliers. But Johnson County battled back, taking the next two sets 25-17 and 25-23 to force a decisive fifth. In front of an orange-clad home crowd, the Cavaliers completed the comeback with a gritty 15-13 finish.

Freshman Ava Esser powered the attack with a team-high 19 kills on an impressive .459 hitting percentage and added a season-best nine blocks. Freshman Lauren Roediger contributed seven kills and six blocks, while sophomore Avery Ringgenberg and freshman Alana Brewster added six and five kills, respectively. Brewster also posted a season-high eight blocks.
