No. 11 Lady Cavaliers open volleyball season with a pair of wins

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 11-ranked Johnson County Community College volleyball team got its 2020-21 season off to a strong start with a pair of home victories Thursday night over No. 12 Highland Community College and Metropolitan Community College. 

The Lady Cavaliers opened the season with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over the nationally ranked Scotties. JCCC opened with a 25-22 win in the first set, but Highland responded with back-to-back wins of 25-13 and 26-24 in sets two and three. Johnson County rebounded with a 25-16 win and closed out the match in the fifth set with a 15-12 win. 

Freshman Ryleigh McBurney and sophomore Kallie Fenscke directed the offense combining for 48 assists. McBurney tallied 29, while Fenschke added 19 along with six digs.

Four player reached double figures in kills, led by sophomore Mikayla Powell with 14. She also had seven digs and team-high eight blocks. Sophomore Gracie LaForge added 13 and a kill percentage of .333 and sophomore Shannon Riley and Sydney Healy each added 10 kills. Riley also had a kill percentage of .320, and Healy posted the only double-double in the match contributing 12 digs. 

Sophomore Makenzie Griffel was the top performer in digs with 23 and freshman Maddie Steiner added 14 in the win. 

Johnson County improved to 2-0 with a four-set win over Metropolitan. The Wolves got on the board first with a 25-23 triumph, but JCCC responded with wins of 25-9, 25-20 and 25-17 to close out the match. 

McBurney and Fenscke were eve better in the second match by combining for 57 assists, 36 by McBurney and 21 by Fenscke. 

Powell demonstrated why she was all-conference hitter last year recording a career-high 20 kills, with an attack percentage of .415. 

Healy recorded her second straight double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs, and Griffel was awarded 22 digs to give her 45 on the night.

Johnson County travels across town to face conference rival Kansas City Kansas on Monday, February 1. The Blue Devils come in 3-1 overall and are 2-0 in conference play with wins over Cloud County and defending conference champion and No. 2-ranked Coffeyville.
