OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 2-ranked Johnson County Community College volleyball team continued its strong start to the season with a pair of sweeps Friday afternoon at JCCC Gymnasium, extending their home winning streak to 10 matches and improving to 6-2 overall.
The Cavaliers opened the day with a hard-fought 25-15, 25-16, 27-25 victory over Des Moines Area Community College, followed by a dominant 25-17, 25-11, 25-21 win against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.
Freshman standout Ava Esser, the reigning KJCCC Division II Player of the Week, led the Cavaliers in the opener with 13 kills and narrowly missed a double-double with nine digs. Fellow freshman Alana Brewster chipped in eight kills and hit a team-best .368, while Annika Black added six kills.
Setter Campbell Chabot, last week's KJCCC Setter of the Week, directed the offense with an impressive 39 assists. Defensively, libero Carlie Martin led with 19 digs, while freshman Kennedie Witthouse added 10.
In the nightcap, Chabot nearly posted a triple-double with 30 assists, seven kills and seven digs, hitting at a .417 clip. Esser again paced the attack with 11 kills, while Martin anchored the defense with 25 digs, bringing her season total to 137—just shy of the conference lead.
Other key contributors included Brooke Boyer and Witthouse with eight digs each, Black with five kills, Lily Waters with four kills at an efficient .500 percentage, and Avery Rinngenberg with five kills and three digs.
The Cavaliers now turn their attention to conference play, opening at Neosho County Community College on Wednesday, September 3.
