OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – For the second time in the first three weeks of the 2025 season, the Johson County Community College volleyball team has swept the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Division II Volleyball Player of the Week award, with Ava Esser, Campbell Chabot and Carlie Martin all picking up the honors. These three swept the honors in week one, and Chabot and Martin were also recognized in week two as well.
Eva Esser – KJCCC D-II Volleyball Player of the Week
Freshman outside/right-side hitter Ava Essar helped lead Johnson County to a 3-1 week tallying 64 kills while hitting an impressive .392 over the four matches. Essar posted a night for the ages, tallying a remarkable 31 kills to set the Johnson County record for kills in a match, fueling the No. 5-ranked Cavaliers to a four-set victory (25-22, 25-23, 25-20, 25-17) at Neosho County on Wednesday in both team's conference opener.
Essar's final stat line for the night was 31 kills, on 52 attacks for a .500 kill percentage, five blocks and four digs. With an incredible 7.75 kills per set during the performance, she bested the previous record of 28 by All-American Jordan Lockwood against Allen on September 16, 2009. In Kansas Jayhawk Community College history, Esser became just the 14th player all-time to have 30-plus kills, ranking tied for eighth. Her 31 kills also marked the most by any NJCAA D-II player in a match this season.
She added 33 more kills in three matches at Kirkwood Community College over the weekend that included double-digit efforts in sweeps over Sauk Valley (13 kills) and Southeastern (15 kills). Essar currently leads the conference in total kills with 159 and ranks second in kills per set at 3.98.
Campbell Chabot – KJCCC D-I Setter of the Week
Freshman setter Campbell Chabot continued her stellar play in leading the Johnson County offense with 123 total assists over four matches, for a 9.46 per set average. Chabot began the week with 39 assists in a 3-1 road victory over Neosho County in both team's conference opener. She followed with 31 and 30 assists in sweeps over Sauk Valley and Southeastern and 23 in a loss to nationally ranked Kirkwood. Chabot currently leads the conference with 402 total assists, 141 clear of the second highest total.
Carlie Martin – KJCCC Defensive Player of the Week
Sophomore libero Carlie Martin, the reigning KJCCC and NJCAA D-II Defensive Player of the Week, was again a defensive force for Johnson County Community College. She tallied 74 digs over four matches, helped the No. 5-ranked Cavaliers to a 3-1 record. Martin opened the week racking up a season-high 29 digs in a 3-1 win at Neosho County in both team's conference opener. That effort ranks as her third-best of her career. At the Kirkwood Tournament over the weekend, she recorded 20 digs in a sweep over Sauk Valley, 15 in a sweep over Southeastern and 10 in a loss to nationally ranked Kirkwood. Martin has finished in double figures in digs all 12 matches this season. She currently stands second in the conference with 211 total digs.
