Historic week for Ava Esser: JCCC freshmen earns triple recognition in volleyball

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – One day after being named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Division II Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season, Johnson County Community College freshman Ava Esser earned national recognition as the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Offensive Player of the Week and was named the Co-Player of the Week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

Esser just the second player in program history be selected be selected by all three organizations, joining Maddie Steiner who achieved the trifecta in late September 2021.

Esser, an outside/right-side hitter,  recorded back-to-back double-doubles in kills and digs to help power the No. 9-ranked Cavaliers to a pair of conference sweeps last week. Over the two victories Esser hit .455 with 24 kills, averaging 4.17 per set, along with 21 digs and 11 blocks. In a 3-0 home victory against Coffeyville, Esser finished with 14 kills, a .458 kill percentage and 11 digs. She nearly recorded a triple-double finishing with seven blocks. On Friday night in another 3-0 home win over Highland, Esser's line was 11 kills, .450 kill percentage, 10 digs and four blocks.

Esser currently ranks fourth in the conference with 261 total kills, second in kills per set at 3.90 and fifth in kill percentage at .304.
