JCCC softball back to .500 with sweep over Allen

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County softball team opened its Kansas Jayhawk Conference season by completing a two-game sweep over Allen on Friday, winning 8-0 and 5-1. The wins pull the Lady Cavaliers back to. 500 on the season at 6-6 overall, 2-0 in conference play. 

In the opener, Aubrey Peck got Johnson County on the board  in bottom of the second inning with a solo home run to right center, her first of the season and seventh RBI. She hit her third double of the season in the third inning. 

Emma Stanwix had two hits and four RBI in the game. In the fourth, with Kaylin Watkins on first with a single, Stanwix belted two-run home run over the left field fence. It was her second homer of the season. An inning later she ripped a triple scoring Harlee Walker and Watkins. Stanwix leads the team with 13 runs driven in.

Haley Puccio, last week's KJCCC Softball Player of the Week, drove in a run with her team-leading third triple of the season. 

Right-hander Kyla Etter hurled a complete-game shutout, scattering four hits with three strikeouts over five innings. She is now 3-2 on the season. 

In the second game, Johnson County scored all five runs in the bottom of the first and held on for a 5-1 victory. 

Watkins has the big hit in the innings, belting a three-run home run, her third of the season which leads the squad.  Puccio and Nia Thomas were base and scored on the shot. Thomas led the team with two hits in the game. 

Watkins also picked up her first victory in the circle this season. She earned a complete-game victory,  allowing just one earned run off three hits with six strikeouts in her seven innings of work.

Katie Enneking was credited with an RBI in the inning with a single. 

Johnson County travels to Parsons, Kan., for a conference doubleheader with Labette on Thursday, March 25.  They return home to host Cloud County on Saturday, March 27 in a twin bill scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
