OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College infielder Brady Slavens, one of the nation's top junior college hitters in 2020, announced he will play for the Arkansas Razorbacks next fall.
Slavens was batting .507 (38-for-75) with a NJCAA-leading 14 home runs and 47 RBI through 22 games this season at JCCC. He also had nine doubles, two triples. He had 13 multiple-hit game and 12 multiple-RBI games in just 22 games. He led the Kansas Jayhawk Conference in hits, home runs and RBI and tied for second in doubles.
It is unclear whether Slavens will classify as a sophomore or junior at Arkansas in 2021. The NCA has yet to decide whether spring athletes in Division I sports will receive an extra year of eligibility because of the shortened season, and how shortened seasons affect athletes transferring from community college. The NCAA granted a blanket year of eligibility last week to all athletes in Division II. Its decision on Division I is expected next week.
By playing at JCCC this year, Slavens is also eligible for the 2020 MLB Draft. Slavens was on pace for an All-America campaign when his team's season was suspended due to coronavirus on March 12. Johnson County (20-3) was ranked ninth nationally at the time.
He was named the Jayhawk Conference player of the week three consecutive times in late February and early March. In the final full week of the season he was named NJCAA national player of the week when he went 7-for-11 with 4 home runs, 15 RBI and 7 runs scored in four games.
Slavens came to Johnson County after playing his freshman year at Wichita State University. The highlight of his freshman year came in WSU's final victory of 2019, over top-seeded East Carolina at the American Athletic Conference Tournament. Slavens hit a three-run hom run in the top of the ninth inning to extend a one-run lead to four.
A local product out of Olathe Northwest, Slavens was the number one ranked player and shortstop in the state of Kansas according to Perfect Game and Prep Baseball Report.
