WICHITA, Kan. – With its season hanging in the balance, Johnson County Community College delivered a finish no one inside Eck Stadium will soon forget.
Down to its final at-bat and trailing by two runs, the Cavaliers mounted a rally to load the bases and bring Ryan Bradford to the plate. The freshman outfielder, who had already left his mark on the game earlier in the night, delivered the biggest swing of JCCC's season—launching a walk-off grand slam to complete an 11-9 comeback victory over Barton Community College and keep the Cavaliers alive in the Region 6/Plains District Tournament.
Bradford's blast, his second home run of the game, capped a five-RBI night and ignited a celebration as his teammates stormed the field. What had been a tense elimination game ended in an instant, flipping from desperation to jubilation with one swing.
The dramatic finish came after a wild, back-and-forth contest in which Barton appeared to take control early. The Cougars struck for four runs in the second inning and continued to apply pressure throughout the game, finishing with 16 hits. Rhett Winchester drove in three runs, while JJ Spafford added four RBIs, including a home run, helping Barton build a 9-6 lead heading into the closing stages.
But Johnson County never let the game get out of reach.
Despite being outhit 16-10, the Cavaliers stayed within striking distance by grinding out at-bats and taking advantage of opportunities. They drew eight walks and consistently found ways to put runners on base, setting up chances late. Boston Bruce turned in a perfect 3-for-3 performance with a home run, three runs scored and two RBIs, while Ashton Hartwig chipped in three RBIs and Colin Coonradt had two hit, two walks and scored twice to help pace the offense alongside Bradford.
The bullpen also played a key role in keeping the deficit manageable. After Barton's middle-inning surge, JCCC's pitching staff pieced things together to hold the line late, giving the offense the opportunity to mount its comeback. Anson Siebert delivered 1.1 scoreless innings in relief to earn the win and set the stage for the final rally.
In the ninth, patience and execution put the Cavaliers in position. With the bases loaded and the season on the line, Bradford stepped in and delivered the decisive blow, turning a two-run deficit into a walk-off victory.
With the win, Johnson County improves to 59-3 and advances in the elimination bracket, keeping its postseason hopes intact. The Cavaliers will face Cowley on Saturday at 1 p.m. as they continue their run through the tournament.
