OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The No. 1-ranked Johnson County Community College baseball team advanced in the Region 6 Tournament on Friday with a dominant 16-3 victory over Garden City, completing a two-game sweep.
After erupting for seven home runs in a 19-7 Game 1 win on Thursday, the Cavaliers stayed red hot at the plate, launching five more homers in Friday's clincher. The offensive outburst pushed JCCC's season total to 188 home runs, setting a new NJCAA single-season record and tying LSU for the all-time college baseball mark.
JCCC wasted little time taking control, scoring in the first inning before breaking the game open with a seven-run fifth. The Cavaliers finished with 16 runs on 16 hits.
Colin Coonradt powered the offense with two home runs and four RBIs, while Boston Bruce added three hits, including a homer, and drove in three. Briggs Roe also homered and went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, and Isaac Pamaran added a two-run blast off the bench
On the mound, Ashton Nance earned the win, allowing just three runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out six over five innings. The bullpen combination of Lance Alexander, Hudson Byrd and Braylon Brooks closed out the victory with two scoreless innings.
With the sweep, the Cavaliers continue their postseason run while cementing their place in the record books as one of the most prolific power-hitting teams in college baseball history.
