WICHITA, Kan. — With their postseason life on the line, top-seeded Johnson County Community College delivered one of its most complete performances of the season, pulling away from No. 2 seed Cloud County for a 13-4 victory Friday at Eck Stadium to remain alive in the Region 6/Plains District Tournament.
The Cavaliers (58-3) combined timely hitting, lineup depth and shutdown relief pitching to overcome an early deficit and turn a competitive contest into a decisive win.
Cloud County (50-7) grabbed the early edge, pushing across four runs in the first half of the game. The biggest swing came from Kellan Burke, who launched a two-run home run as part of a three-hit afternoon for the T-Birds' offense. Despite the strong start, Cloud County was unable to maintain momentum against a relentless Johnson County lineup.
After falling behind, the Cavaliers steadily chipped away before delivering the game's defining stretch in the middle innings. Johnson County plated runs in multiple frames, then broke things wide open with a massive offensive outburst that produced eight runs, flipping a tight contest into a commanding lead it would not relinquish.
The offensive production came from all over the lineup. Brayden Giesler set the tone with a two-hit performance that included a home run and three RBIs, providing one of the game's biggest blows. Logan Groh and Colin Coonradt each added two hits and two RBIs, with Coonradt also leaving the yard as part of the Cavaliers' power display.
Johnson County's depth was evident from top to bottom, as multiple players contributed key hits and RBIs throughout the game. Lukas Wilson drove in two runs, while Ryan Bradford, Boston Bruce, Briggs Roe and Ashton Hartwig each added an RBI to keep constant pressure on Cloud County pitching. The Cavaliers finished with 13 runs on 13 hits, capitalizing on opportunities and stringing together quality at-bats in nearly every inning.
On the mound, Victor Christal weathered the early storm and ultimately earned the win. The right-hander struck out eight over four innings, limiting further damage after the T-Birds' initial surge. From there, the bullpen took complete control. Hudson Byrd, Cooper Frazier and Ronin Vicenti combined to shut down Cloud County over the final three innings, allowing no runs and preserving the comfortable margin.
Cloud County starter Stocton Timbrook kept the game within reach early, but the Cavaliers eventually broke through. The decisive damage came against the bullpen, as Ian Razak was tagged for six runs in relief during the pivotal middle innings that swung the contest.
With the victory, Johnson County extends its season and continues its march through the elimination side of the bracket. More importantly, the performance reinforced why the Cavaliers entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed—showcasing an explosive offense, resilient pitching staff and the ability to respond when facing adversity.
With new life in the bracket, top-seeded Johnson County Community College won't have much time to celebrate. The Cavaliers will turn right back around to face the No. 10 seed Friday night at 7 p.m. at Eck Stadium in another elimination contest in the Region 6/Plains District Tournament.
Now, the challenge quickly shifts to recovery and execution, as the Cavaliers look to carry that momentum into a quick turnaround matchup against a dangerous lower-seeded opponent with nothing to lose.
With another win, Johnson County would continue its climb through the elimination bracket and move one step closer to a berth in the Plains District title round.
