OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – After opening the season with a four-game sweep over Southwestern, the Johnson County baseball team followed with a three-game sweep over Southeast. The Cavaliers posted wins of 8-3 and 13-3 on Friday afternoon, and 12-2 on Saturday.
In the opener, got a two-run home run from catcher Noah Cook, a solo shot from first-baseman Alex Austin and designated hitter Nick Iannantone had a single, double and drove in two runs.
On the hill, right-hander Matt Ronnebaum improved to 2-0 on the season, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts in two innings of work. Left-hander CC Crain followed with 2.1 innings pitched, allowing three runs, one earned, with five strikeouts. Right-hander Danny Trehey closed out the game and notched his firs save. He allowed just one hit with two strikeouts.
In the second game, centerfielder Jackson Galloway had a big game, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and tied his career high with five runs driven in. He was just a double shy of hitting a cycle.
Right-fielder Jake Grauberger had a double and drove in two, and leftfielder Quinton Hall, Cook and Brayden Sites each had one RBI.
Left-hander Max Chapman relieved starter Rene Ramos in the third inning and was credited with the victory, his first of the season. He pitched three innings, allowing one unearned run with six strikeouts.
Johnson County completed the sweep Saturday led by Iannantone's bat again. He went 3-for-3 with a homer and three driven in.
Third baseman Wyatt Morgan also had three hits, all singles, scored three times and drove in one run.
Shortstop Isaiah Cohens had two singles and two RBI, and Galloway and Grauberger each had two hits, upping their batting averages on the season to .560 and .500.
Austin had a highlight at bat with a two-run blast, his fourth homer of the year.
Right-hander Mikal Ashley got the start and his second victory. He allowed just one hit and struck out five in the first two innings.
Left-hander Jay Long pitched the next two innings and struck out five batters. Right-hander Jack Thornhill followed with two innings of scoreless relief, and right-hander Maverick Hanna closed out the game with two strikeouts in his inning of work.
Johnson County hit the road on Thursday, March 4 for a nine-inning game against Crowder College, and then return home for a double-header with Rockhurst JV on Saturday, March 6. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
