JCCC wins season series with KCKCC

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Kansas City Kansas did hand the fifth-ranked Johnson County baseball team its first loss of 2021, but Cavaliers bounced back and won the series, downing the Blue Devils 7-4 and 15-4 on Saturday afternoon. Johnson County now stand 27-1 overall, and leads the conference with an 11-1 record. 

Center fielder Jackson Galloway extended his hitting streak to 25 straight games, hitting two doubles in the opener, and a single in the second game. He got his second double in the sixth inning and scored on second baseman Brevon Lee's triple. Catcher Nate Stevens followed with a two-run blast for his seventh home run on the season. 

Galloway and Lee also had an RBI, along with right fielder Jake Grauberger, left fielder Quinton Hall and first baseman Alex Austin

Left-hander Jay Long improved to 4-0 on the season, allowing two runs off four hits with six strikeouts over 4.1 innings pitched. Left-hander CC Crain earned his first save pitching the final 1.2 innings in scoreless relief. 

Hall, Austin, Lee and designated hitter Nick Iannantone had the hot bats in the second win. Hall was 3-for4 with a homer, three runs scored and five driven in. He hit a 2-run shot in the first and had an RBI single in the second and a two-run single in the seventh. 

Austin had two singles and two doubles, scored twice and drove in two run. Lee was 3-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI, and Iannantone was 3-fo-3 with a double, scored four times and drove in two runs. 

Right-hand pitcher Mikal Ashley, last week's conference pitcher of the week, got the start but only lasted two innings, giving up four runs of two hits. 

Right-hander Paul Rector took over the hill and was able to shut down the Blue Devils hitters. He allowed just hits, two walks and struck out eight batters over four innings of relief, and earned his first victory of the season. 

Right-hander Jack Thornhill did not allow a hit while closing out the final inning.
