OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County baseball team split the season series with Fort Scott over the weekend. Fort Scott took the first and final game of the four-game series, and the Cavaliers won the middle two games.
The series opened at Fort Scott on Friday, March 25. In the opener Johnson County pulled to within one after the top of the fifth, but the Greyhounds plated six runs, five in the sixth to win going away 12-5.
Easton Elliot had three hits and an RBI, and Nick Iannantone had two singles and drove in a run, but the Greyhounds hit three big home runs, two by Brody Szako to take the first game,
In the second game, Fort Scott scored two in the first and six in the fourth for an 8-3 advantage but responded with five in the fifth to get back into contention, and eventually prevailed with two runs in the top of the 11th for a 12-10 victory.
Collin Brueggemean had three hits, including a double, and drove three runs. Will Hudler ripped four hits and drove in two, Elliot had a single, a doubles scored twice with two RBI and Blake Mozley had a single, a double and two RBI to pace the Cavaliers.
Gabe Nutter pitched the final two innings and did not allow a hit, with four strikeouts to pick up the victory.
Johnson County returned home on Saturday, March 26 for final two games of the series. The Cavaliers scored two in the bottom of the sixth to pull out a 6-5 win. Nutter was again the winning pitcher, allowed just one hit, no runs with three strikeouts over the final two innings.
Brueggemen blasted a solo home run and Mozley drove in two runs to lead JCCC.
In the final game, Fort Scott made the late inning rally to pull out a 7-6 win. The Greyhounds trailed 6-3 after seven innings but scored a run in the eight and three in the ninth to get a split in the series.
Hudler again had the big bat for the Cavaliers going 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and three driven in.
Johnson Count will host Metropolitan on Tuesday, March 29 in a nine-inning game starting at 2 p.m.
