Cavaliers sweep four-game series with Highland

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County baseball team recently completed a four-game series with Highland, and the Cavaliers won all four game to improve to 29-9 on the season. On Saturday at Highland, JCCC posted wins of 10-0 and 18-4. The Cavaliers completed the sweep with wins of 104 and 20-10 on Sunday at the JCCC Baseball Complex.

Right-hander Grant Garza nearly hurled a complete game no-hitter in the opener. He allowed just one single and struck out five hitters to up his season mark to 3-0.

At the plate, seven different hitters drove in a run for Johnson County. Blake Mozley, Colin Brueggemann and Will Hudler each plated two runners. Cooper Combs, Nick Iannantone, Quinton Hall and Easton Elliot had one RBI each.

In the second game, the Cavaliers to control early, scoring four in the top of the first and nine more in the top of the second.

Mozley ripped two doubles, walked twice, scored two runs and drove in a game-high four runs, and Iannantone had a double, two singles, scored three and drove in three. 

Other key hitters were Hall (2-for-2, 2-runs, 2-RBI), Brueggemann (1-single, 1 -walk, 1-run, 2-RBI), Brevon Lee (3-for-4, 3-runs, 1-RBI), Combs (1-single, 3-runs, 1-RBI) and Jaxson Wentworth (2-for-4, 4-runs, 1-RBI). 

Left-hander Trent Martin picked up his fifth win on the season, allowing two runs off five hits with four strikeouts in four innings of work. 

In the third game of the series, Elliot and Mozley again provided big bats for the Cavaliers. Elliot was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI, and Mozley had a single, double and drove in two. Brueggeman also drove in two runs. 

Left-hander Max Chapman pitched the first four innings to earn the victory, and right-hander Gabe Nutter hurled the final three innings, allowing just two hits with seven strikeouts. 

In the final game, Johnson County scored 16 of their 20 runs in the first five innings highlighted by a five-run second. JCCC collected 16 hits and drew 15 walks over the nine innings. 

Jeremy Rader and Noah Steele were stars at the plate. Rader went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and seven driven in, one shy of the JCCC single-game record. Steele also collected three hits, including a double and a homer, and he drove in five runs. 

Johnson County will host Baker JV on Tuesday afternoon, then open up a big four-game series with No. 12-ranked Cowley with the first two hosted by the Tigers on Thursday, April 14. The two teams return to JCCC on Saturday, April 16 with the first pitched scheduled for 1 p.m.
