OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 1 seed and No. 2 ranked Johnson County Community College baseball team swept the best-of-three series with No. 16 seed Pratt Community College Friday afternoon with a 9-2 victory. The Cavaliers opened the series on Thursday with an 8-5 triumph.
Sophomore catcher Cal Kilgore drove in five runs on three hits to lead the Cavaliers past the Beavers. He doubled in two runs in the third, had an RBI single in the in the fifth and blasted another two-run double in the eighth.
Freshman shortstop Maddux Fleck also ripped two doubles, scored a run and drove in two. Sophomore first baseman Dagen Brewer went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored, and sophomore Jack Mosh collected two hits and scored twice for the Cavaliers.
Brandon Stone pitched seven solid innings on the bump. The freshman right-hander struck out 10 batters while only surrendering two runs and seven hits. Sophomore right-hander Maddox Burkitt closed out the game with two scoreless innings, allowing one hit, a walk with three strikeouts.
Johnson County (48-10) will now face No. 8 seed Butler (32-25) on Wednesday, May 15 at Eck Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. Johnson County holds a one game edge in the all-time series with the Grizzlies at 17-16. The Cavaliers defeated Butler 12-10 last year on their way to capturing the region championship. This will the 12th time they have met in the postseason.
