OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Following the conclusion of the 2024 Major League Baseball (MLB) Amateur Draft, former Johnson County Community College and Florida Atlantic University pitcher Danny Trehey has signed an undrafted free agent with the Houston Astros. He becomes the 73rd former player to either be drafted or signed by a MLB organization.
"I want to thank everyone who has helped me along with this process. My family, coaches, teammates, and friends have been with me every step of the way. I also want to thank the Astros organization for taking a chance on me. I can't wait to get to work," Trehey said in a release issued by the Florida Atlantic University sports communications office.
While at Johnson County, Trehey was able to compete for three seasons due to the extended eligibility from COVID-19 in 2020. The right-hander out St. James Academy made 38 appearances as a Cavalier, six as a starter. He logged a 6-2 record with a 3.87 earned run average in 74.1 innings of work. He had 11 career saves which ranks fourth all-time at JCCC. Trehey struck out 117 batters while allowing 47 runs, 32 earned of 46 hits and 38 walks.
In 2022, Trehey finished with a record of 5-1 and a team-best ERA of 2.45 over 36 and two-thirds innings of work. He struck out 55 batters while limiting opposing hitters to a .170 batting average, second lowest on the staff. Trehey put together one of the most dominating efforts in team history in a 22-0 win at Labette on April 28, mowing down 15 batters while not allowing a single hit. It was the 10th no-hitter in Johnson County history and his 15 strikeouts tied the third-most in a game in JCCC baseball history. That effort earned him the KJCCC Pitcher of the Week for week 12.
The 2021 season Trehey was the team's top closer. He made a team-high 20 appearance on the hill, with one star. Trehey finished 1-1 with nine saves, which tied for second in the conference, fifth in the NJCAA and third on JCCC's season chart. He had 57 strikeouts, third on the staff, in 30.2 innings of work, and an earned run average of 6.46 while holding hitters to a .181 batting average.
In the COVID shortened 2020 season, his first as a collegiate player, Trehey made six appearances on the bump allowing just two hits, no runs, two walks with five strikeouts over seven innings and finished with an ERA of 0.00 with one save.
Trehey continued his career at Florida Atlantic University and this past season he was the Owls top reliever, leading the staff with eight saves. He allowed just nine earned runs in 44 and one-third innings. Trehey made 26 appearances and held opponents scoreless in 22 those 26 appearances. He finished third on the team with 66 strikeouts while holding opponents hit just .144 against him.
As a prep athlete at St. James Academy, Trehey was the Kanas 5A Pitcher of the Year by Sports in Kansas and the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches in 2019. He garnered first-team All-State by SIK and KABC, first-team All-Eastern Kansas League and was voted the EKL Pitcher of the Year.
