2022 Baseball Players Moving On

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College head baseball coach Eric Horner announced that six members from his Cavaliers baseball program have made decisions on where they will be playing next year. All six recently signed their National Letter-of-Intent. 

They are left-handed pitcher Max Chapman (University of North Carolina-Charlotte); right-handed pitcher Grant Garza (Tarleton State University); outfielder Quinton Hall (University of Central Missouri); right-handed pitcher Maverick Hanna (Pittsburg State University); right-handed pitcher Hayden Minton (Missouri State University); and right-handed pitcher Rene Ramos (Eckerd College). 

Chapman made 13 appearances on the hill, seven as a starter. He finished 4-2 with a save and had a team-high 72 strikeouts in 52.2 innings pitched. His 72 strikeouts tied for ninth in the conference. Chapman led the starting staff at JCCC with an earned run average of .273, and he held opposing hitters to an average of .229. He was selected first-team All-Kanas Jayhawk Conference East Division and second-team All-Region 6. 

Garza made 14 appearances on the mound last season, one a starter.  He finished 2-0 with 33 strikeouts 25.0 innings pitched, and an earned run average of 2.88. He allowed just eight earned runs and seven walks. 

Hall batted .407 (59-for-145) with 16 doubles, three triples, eight home runs, 62 runs scored and 54 driven in last season. He produced 18 multiple-hit games and 13 multiple-RBI games and earned honorable mention All-Kansas Jayhawk East Division. In 2020, Hall was selected first-team All-American by JUCO Baseball Blog after batting .462 (30-for-65) with seven doubles, two triples, six home runs, 32 runs scored and 23 driven in before the season was cut short by COVID-19. He collected 10 multiple-hit games and seven multiple-RBI games. 

Hanna made eight appearances all in relief in 2021. He finished 2-0 with 21 strikeouts in 13.0 innings pitched, and had an earned run average of 0.69, best among the relievers. He also held opposing batters to an average of .106. 

Minton will make his debut this season in a Cavaliers uniform, after playing the 2020 and 2021 season at Missouri State University. In 2020, Minton started four games going 1-2 with an earned run average of 3.48. He struck out 16 batters in 20.2 innings with a .221 opponent average.  He ranked ninth in the MVC in opponent average and was one of only two qualifying Valley pitchers who did not allow a double on the season.  In 2021, Minton made nine appearances on the hill, eight in the starting rotation. He finished 0-5 with a 4.19 ERA. He struck out 38 batters in 43.0 innings with a .235 opponent average. He ranked fifth on the staff in innings pitched and tied for fourth in strikeouts. 

Ramos made 11 appearances seven as starter, going 5-1 with an earned run average of 4.88. He struck out 38 batters in 31.1 innings of work.  Ramos came to JCCC after spending the 2019 and 2020 seasons at McLennan Community College. In 2020, he made six appearances logging 9.1 relief innings. He finished 1-0 with one save and an ERA of 7.71. As a freshman in 2019, Ramos made 13 appearances with two starts and posted an ERA of 4.79 with 19 strikeouts in 20.2 innings pitched. He finished 1-0 with two saves.
