OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County got two solid outings from pitchers Hayden Minton, Grant Garza and Trent Martin, and the Cavaliers ripped 20 hits to sweep a two-game series with Lake Land College. The Cavaliers won the first game 3-2 and followed with an 8-2 victory to up their overall record to 9-4.
In the opener, Minton struck out nine batters over six innings, allowing two unearned runs off four hits. With the victory, Minton improved to 3-0 on the season. He was the conference pitcher of the week last week.
Sophomore designated hitter Nick Iannantone and freshman first baseman Colin Brueggemann each collected two hits. Iannantone had two singles and scored twice. Brueggemann had a single and a double and drove in a run in the first inning.
However, the big hit in the game came in the bottom of the bottom of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded and two out, sophomore outfielder Will Hudler drilled a line drive single to plate two runs to put the Cavaliers up 3-0.
In the second game, Garza got the start but did not get a decision. He allowed two runs, one earned off five hits and struck out seven batters in his 4.2 innings of work. Martin logged the final 4.1 innings and allowed three hits, no runs, with four strikeouts to earn his second victory of the season.
At the plate, JCCC had five players produced multiple hits in the game. Iannantone was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and a stolen base. Brueggemann had a single and a double, stole a base, scored a run, and drove in two.
Sophomore outfielder Quinton Hall went 3-for-4 and scored twice. Freshman designated hitter Jeremy Rader ripped a single and a triple, scored two runs and drove in three, and freshman third baseman Easton Elliot had two singles and an RBI.
