OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Earlier this week, the Johnson County Community College men's soccer program swept the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) Men's Division II Player of the Week awards. Now, the Cavaliers have added national recognition to their growing list of accomplishments.
Freshman forward Sergio Hernandez Marquez was named NJCAA D-II Player of the Week, while freshman goalkeeper Daniel Wozniak earned NJCAA D-II Goalkeeper of the Week honors. This marks the first time in program history that JCCC has had both the national player and goalkeeper recognized in the same week.
Hernandez Marquez proved to be a dynamic offensive force for the Cavaliers last week. He scored twice, including the game winner, in a 3-0 road victory over Metropolitan on Wednesday night. He followed with another two-goal effort in a 5-0 home win over North Iowa Area, again netting the game winner. For the season, Hernandez Marquez leads the KJCCC in game-winning goals (2), is tied for the league lead in goals (4), and ranks second in points (8).
Wozniak was equally impressive between the posts, improving his record to 3-1-0 while lowering his goals-against average to 0.75. He recorded back-to-back shutouts over the weekend, stopping three shots in the 5-0 win over North Iowa Area and turning away 10 attempts—eight in the second half—in a 1-0 victory over No. 3-ranked Iowa Lakes. Wozniak currently leads all KJCCC D-II goalkeepers in wins (3), shutouts (2), goals-against average (0.75), saves (23), and save percentage (.885).
