OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 9-ranked Johnson County Community College men's soccer team let leads of 2-0 and 3-2 slip away Saturday afternoon, settling for a 3-3 draw at St. Louis Community College.
The Cavaliers appeared to be on their way to a sixth straight victory—and possibly a fifth consecutive shutout—after racing out to a 2-0 advantage less than 10 minutes into the match. Freshman forward Khoi Woods (Olathe North HS/Olathe, Kan.)struck first, scoring JCCC's fastest goal of the season just 4:05 into play. Five minutes later, Woods set up freshman forward Conor Myers (St. Dominic HS/Lake St. Louis, Mo.) to double the lead.
Momentum shifted midway through the half when St. Louis' Joao Victor Gonzaga cut the deficit in the 29th minute with an unassisted goal. Four minutes later, Felipe Alcanara Sam buried the equalizer to bring the Archers level at 2-2.
Woods and Myers combined again late in the first half to restore JCCC's lead, but it lasted less than a minute into the second. The Archers quickly responded to tie the match at 3-3, where it would remain despite aggressive play on both sides over the final 44 minutes.
Freshman goalkeeper Cooper Burandt (Blue Valley Northwest HS/Overland Park, Kan.) finished with three saves in the draw.
The Cavaliers (now 5-1-1) turn their attention to Wednesday's road showdown against No. 5-ranked Neosho County. JCCC leads the all-time series 28-16-1, but the Panthers have won five straight, including all three meetings last season.
