OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Trailing 2-1 at halftime in their home opener, the Johnson County Community College men's soccer team stormed back with three unanswered goals in the second half to secure a 4-2 victory over Southeastern Community College on Sunday morning at the JCCC Soccer Complex.
Southeastern struck first in the ninth minute when Joshua Barboza converted a free kick just outside the box. The scoring chance came after JCCC goalkeeper Daniel Wozniak was called for holding the ball too long, giving the Blackhawks the early 1-0 advantage.
The Cavaliers responded in the 15th minute off a corner kick. Sophomore midfielder Ben Points delivered a cross to the back post, where sophomore midfielder Kael Drummond headed the ball into the net to level the score at 1-1.
Southeastern regained the lead later in the half when midfielder Yota Ishikawa buried a rebound off the foot of Tomas Rapos, sending the visitors into halftime up 2-1.
With just under 30 minutes remaining, the Cavaliers found the equalizer. Freshman forward Khoi Woods set up freshman defender Peyton McCawley, who settled the ball and fired a shot into the net in the 63rd minute. Less than two minutes later, JCCC took the lead for good. After a penalty was called in the box, sophomore defender Michael Bernebe calmly converted the spot kick for what proved to be the game-winner.
Woods added insurance in the 82nd minute, finishing a feed from sophomore forward Tanner Poirier to seal the 4-2 victory.
Freshman goalkeeper Daniel Wozniak picked up his first collegiate victory by stopping eight of the 10 shots he faced.
The Cavaliers now turn their attention to a road match at Metropolitan Community College on Wednesday night, before returning home for three straight contests against North Iowa Area (Sept. 5), No. 3-ranked Iowa Lakes (Sept. 7), and Allen (Sept. 10).
