OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The No. 14-ranked Johnson County Community College men's soccer team rolled to a 3-0 victory over Metropolitan Community College Wednesday night at Paragon Star Soccer Complex in Lee's Summit, Mo. The win evened the Cavaliers' record at 2-2-0, while Metropolitan slipped to 1-3-1.
JCCC controlled play from start to finish, outshooting the Wolves 33-9, including a 21-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Freshman forward Sergio Hernandez Marquez led the way, scoring his first two career goals late in the first half. He opened the scoring in the 40th minute off a feed from freshman midfielder Thomas House, then struck again four minutes later on an assist from sophomore Tanner Poirier to send JCCC into halftime with a 2-0 cushion.
Freshman midfielder Khoi Woods, the reigning KJCCC D-II Player of the Week, added his second goal in as many matches to make it 3-0 in the 62nd minute. Freshman forward Conor Meyers got the assists, his first of the season.
In goal, freshman Cooper Burandt turned aside all three shots he faced to secure his first collegiate shutout and victory.
The Cavaliers return home for two key weekend matchups: North Iowa Area (3-0-1) on Friday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m., followed by a showdown with No. 3-ranked Iowa Lakes (3-1-1) on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m.
