Men’s Soccer All-Americans (18 NJCAA/6 United Soccer Coaches)

John Layman
Forward (1977 & 79)
1977 NJCAA Honorable Mention

John Layman became the Johnson County Community College men’s soccer program’s first NJCAA All-American, earning honorable mention honors following the 1977 season. As the team’s leading scorer, Layman guided the Cavaliers to a 12-3-0 record and the program’s first Region 6 championship. He scored five of JCCC's seven goals at regionals, including a program-record four in a 5-2 semifinal win over Cloud County. In the 2-0 championship victory over Hesston, Layman scored the opening goal and later assisted on the game-winning second goal. He finished the season with 23 total goals, a mark that stood until 1993.

Phil Gastl
Forward (1978-79)

1979 NJCAA 2nd-Team
Phil Gastl became the second player in program history to earn NJCAA All-America honors, receiving second-team recognition following his sophomore season in 1979. Gastl led the squad with 29 points that year and had also been JCCC’s leading scorer as a freshman. He remains one of only four players in Johnson County men’s soccer history to lead the team in scoring in both their freshman and sophomore seasons. Gastl helped the Cavaliers post 9-6-1 records both seasons and finish runner-up at the Region 6 Tournament. He was also a two-time All-Region 6 selection.

Jeff Seiter
Midfielder (1981-82)
1982 NJCAA Honorable Mention

Jeff Seiter guided Johnson County to a program-record 16 wins and the team’s second Region 6 championship in 1982, earning NJCAA honorable mention All-America honors in recognition of his standout season. Seiter was also a two-time All-Region 6 selection, just the second player to earn the award both years.

Jim Ross
Forward (1983)
1983 NJCAA 2nd-Team

Jim Ross earned NJCAA second-team All-America in 1983 while leading JCCC to its second straight Region 6 title.  Ross led the Cavaliers in scoring helping JCCC finish 11-6-0.

David Bortnick
Goalkeeper (1985)
1985 NJCAA 1st-Team
David Bortnick became the fourth Johnson County player to earn NJCAA All-America honors—and the first to be named to the first team. He remains the only JCCC goalkeeper to receive All-America recognition. Bortnick helped the Cavaliers reach the semifinals of the Region VI Tournament, finishing the season with an 8-9-1 record. Bortnick also was selected to the All-Region 6 team.

Mark Mathews
Forward (1986)
1986 NJCAA Honorable Mention

In 1986, Mark Matthews put together one of the top offensive seasons in Johnson County history and was named NJCAA honorable mention All-America, along with an All-Region 6 honor. He tallied 46 points on 17 goals and 12 assists—each a team record at the time. Today, those totals rank third, tied for sixth, and tied for fourth, respectively. Matthews’ play helped lead the Cavaliers to an 11-5-2 record and a runner-up finish in the Region VI Tournament.

Sean Platt
Forward (1986-87)
1987 NJCAA 2nd-Team

Sean Platt, a second-team NJCAA All-America selection in 1987, was a key offensive weapon for Johnson County. He led the Cavaliers with nine assists and added three goals for 15 points, helping guide JCCC to a Region 6 championship. At the time, his nine assists were the second-highest single-season total in program history; today, they rank tied for 13th on JCCC’s season assist chart.

Ricky Stringfield
Forward (1987-88)
1988 NJCAA 2nd-Team

One of the top offensive threats in program history, Ricky Stringfield earned second-team NJCAA All-America honors in 1988 after leading Johnson County with 53 points, 22 goals, and nine assists. His 53 points set a new single-season record, while his 22 goals ranked second-highest at the time; today, those totals stand as second and third, respectively. Stringfield also set career records with 71 points and 30 goals, currently ranking third all-time in both categories.

Scott Noernberg
Forward (1991)
1991 NJCAA 2nd-Team

In 1991, Scott Noernberg became just the third player in Johnson County history to surpass 40 points in a season, finishing with 42 points on 18 goals and six assists. His outstanding play earned him second-team NJCAA All-America honors. Noernberg’s 42 points currently rank eighth in program history, while his 18 goals rank fifth. On September 13, in a 10-0 win over Allen, he scored four goals in a single match, tying a program record; he remains one of just six players in JCCC history to achieve a four-goal game.

Shawn Beyer
Forward (1992-93)
1992 NJCAA 2nd-Team

In 1993, Shawn Beyer etched his name in Johnson County soccer history. A second-team NJCAA All-America selection, Beyer set single-season records with 60 points and 24 goals, and became the first—and only—player in program history to reach 100 career points. He finished his career with school records of 38 goals and 24 assists, including four hat tricks in 1993, highlighted by a four-goal game against Allen County that tied a program record. Beyer also recorded nine multiple-goal games in a single season, still the most in JCCC history. Beyer’s sophomore season overshadowed his freshman campaign, in which he tallied 40 points on 14 goals and 12 assists. Over his two seasons, he helped the Cavaliers post a 40-3-1 record, including a school-record 21 wins in 1992. He also became just the third player in team history to be selected All-Region 6 as a freshman and sophomore. Beyer continued his career at SIU-Edwardsville and later played professionally for the Kansas City Attack and Philadelphia Kixx.

Carlos Olivas
Midfielder (1993-94)
1994 NJCAA 1sTeam

Carlos Olivas became the ninth player in Johnson County history to earn NJCAA All-America honors in 1994—and only the second to receive first-team recognition. A key midfielder for the Cavaliers during his two seasons at JCCC, Olivas played a central role in the 1994 campaign, helping lead the team to region and district titles and the program’s first NJCAA National Tournament appearance. He finished his JCCC career with 34 points, including nine goals and 16 assists, the latter tying for fourth all-time in program history. Olivas went on to two standout seasons at Rockhurst, helping the Hawks reach two NAIA National Championship appearances and compiling 37 points on 12 goals and 13 assists. He then played four seasons professionally for the Kansas City Attack, scoring 120 points—including one three-point goal, 39 two-point goals, and 39 assists. His best professional season came in 1999-2000, when he totaled 59 points on 20 two-point goals and 19 assists.

Kyle Knop
Forward (1994-95))
1995 NJCAA 2nd-Team

In 1995, Knop became Johnson County’s 12th NJCAA All-America selection, earning second-team honors. A key offensive contributor and team leader both on and off the field, he finished the 1995 season second on the team in scoring with 21 points, including eight goals and five assists, helping JCCC to a 14-6-1 record and a Region 6 championship. He also was named to the All-Region 6 team. Over his career, Knop recorded 20 assists—second all-time in program history—and tied for ninth in career points with 50. His freshman season was equally impressive, setting a school record with 15 assists while adding seven goals for a total of 29 points.

Paul Walker
Forward (1997-98)
1998 United Soccer Coaches 2nd-Team

Paul Walker became the first Johnson County player to earn All-America recognition from the National Soccer Coaches Association (now United Soccer Coaches), receiving second-team honors. One of the team’s most consistent performers, Walker was also voted the top defender in the region by both the NSCA and NJCAA. He anchored a defense that recorded four shutouts and posted a 1.42 goals-against average, while contributing offensively with one goal. As a freshman, Walker added a goal and two assists.

Eyob Jiregna
Midfielder (1998-99)
1999 NJCAA Honorable Mention

Eyob Jiregna was a key midfielder for the Cavaliers during his career at JCCC, particularly in 1999, when he was named All-America honorable mention by the NJCAA.  Described by head coach Jim Schwab as a steady, reliable player, Jiregna helped lead JCCC to a 15-51 mark and runner-up finish in the Region 6 Tournament. He also was a key member of the defense that posted six shutouts and a goals against average of 1.33.  Offensively, Jiregna scored two goals and had four assists for eight points.  Both of his goals were game-winners. He was also named as an All-Region 6 performer. 

Pat Geraghty
Forward (2000-01)
2001 NJCAA 2nd-Team

Pat Geraghty quickly emerged as a force in Johnson County’s attack, earning All-Region 6 honors as a freshman with 17 points. In his sophomore season, he established himself as one of the top players in the NJCAA, earning second-team All-America and All-Region VI accolades after leading the Cavaliers with 16 goals and 11 assists for 43 points. Five of his goals were game-winners, and four of his assists set up game-winning goals. Geraghty helped JCCC post a 19-4-3 record—the second-highest win total in program history—and a third-place finish in the NJCAA National Tournament. At nationals, he recorded two goals and two assists, earning a spot on the NJCAA All-Tournament Team. He finished his career ranked fifth in scoring with 60 points, tied for sixth in goals with 22, and tied for fourth in assists with 16. Geraghty is also one of only six players in program history to record two or more career hat tricks.

Luis Pinto
Forward (2002)
2002 NJCAA 2nd-Team

In 2002, Luis Pinto became the 16th player from Johnson County to earn NJCAA All-America honors, receiving second-team recognition. Pinto led the team with 17 goals, nine assists, and 43 points, with his point total ranking 17th nationally. His 43 points and 17 goals tied for the fifth-best single-season marks in JCCC history. Six of his goals were game-winners, and three of his assists set up game-winning goals.

Serkan Senar

2004 NJCAA Honorable Mention
2004 United Soccer Coaches 2nd-Team

Serkan “Seko” Sener became the first player in Johnson County history to earn All-America honors from both the NJCAA and United Soccer Coaches. He was named NJCAA honorable mention and United Soccer Coaches second-team All-America. Sener also was an All-Region 6 and Kansas East Jayhawk Conference first-team selection. On the field, Sener led the Cavaliers with seven assists and ranked second in goals (12), points (31), and game-winning goals (4), while helping lead the Cavaliers to conference, region and district championships and a fifth-place finish at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament.  He was also a perfect 2-for-2 on penalty kicks. A true leader on and off the field, Sener embodied his role as team captain. His impact extended beyond soccer, as he was one of just 10 students campus-wide to receive the prestigious JCCC Outstanding Student Award.

Lucas Rodriguez
Forward (2004-05)
2005 NJCAA Honorable Mention
2005 United Soccer Coaches 2nd-Team

Lucas Rodriguez became the second player in Johnson County history to earn All-America honors from both the NJCAA and United Soccer Coaches. He was named NJCAA honorable mention and United Soccer Coaches second-team All-America. A midfielder from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, Rodriguez finished second on the team in goals (12), assists (6), and points (30) during his sophomore season. He led the Cavaliers with five game-winning goals, including the decisive strike against Barton County in the Region VI Championship. His efforts powered JCCC to a 17-7 record, a region title, and a runner-up finish in the District Championship. Rodriguez also collected NJCAA All-Region VI first-team, United Soccer Coaches All-Region first-team, and Kansas Jayhawk Conference first-team honors. As a freshman, Rodriguez contributed to one of the most successful teams in program history, helping the Cavaliers capture conference, region, and district titles while finishing fifth at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament. He tallied two goals and three assists for seven points that season. He continued his career at MidAmerica Nazarene followed by five seasons professionally with Minnesota United FC and Jacksonville Armada FC, then spent nine years playing for the Kansas City Comets.

Jorge Rivero
Forward (2013)
2013 United Soccer Coaches 2nd-Team

In 2013, Jorge Rivero became the fourth player in Johnson County history to earn All-America honors from United Soccer Coaches, receiving second-team recognition. He was the most decorated player in the Kansas Jayhawk Conference that season, earning first-team all-conference and all-region honors. Rivero was also selected KJCCC/Verizon Wireless Player of the Week five times and twice named NJCAA National Player of the Week. On the field, Rivero led the Cavaliers in scoring with 43 points on 18 goals and seven assists. He ranked second in the conference in scoring and tied for 16th nationally in points. His 18 goals tied for 15th in the NJCAA, while also tying for fourth on the program’s all-time goals list and tied for fifth on JCCC’s single-season scoring chart with 43 points.

Alan Lopez
Forward (2022)
2022 NJCAA 1st-Team
2022 United Soccer Coaches First-Team

Alan Lopez capped a historic career in 2022 by earning first-team All-America honors from both the NJCAA and United Soccer Coaches, becoming just the fifth player in Johnson County history to achieve that distinction. He was the 18th All-American in program history, only the third to earn first-team NJCAA recognition, and the first to earn first-team by both the NJCAA and USC. Lopez also garnered first-team All-Region 6 and All-Kansas Jayhawk Conference honors. On the field, Lopez led JCCC and ranked second in the conference and 16th in the NJCAA with 33 points. He also ranked fourth in the conference and tied for 21st nationally with 13 goals. He produced three multi-goal matches and netted four game-winners, ranking third in the conference and 11th nationally. Twice during the season, Lopez was honored as the KJCCC Division I Offensive Player of the Week (Weeks 1 and 11). Lopez closed his career with 63 points, 23 goals, 17 assists, and six game-winning goals. His 63 points tied for fourth all-time at JCCC, while his 23 goals rank sixth, his 17 assists fourth, and his six game-winners tied the program’s career record. Off the field, Lopez was equally accomplished. He was one of 11 student-athletes named to the Men’s Junior College Scholar All-America first team and became the first player in JCCC men’s soccer history to be named Scholar Player of the Year. He also earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-America® At-Large College Division honors, becoming just the second JCCC male athlete—and the first soccer player—to receive that distinction.

Kael Drummond
Midfielder (2025)
2013 United Soccer Coaches 1st-Team

In 2025, midfielder Kael Drummmons was selected to the organization’s 2025 Two-Year Division II All-America Team. He is the sixth player in team history to earn All-America recognition and the second under head coach Jeff Cole. Drummond capped an exceptional sophomore campaign by leading a Cavaliers squad that finished 13-5-4, captured the Region 6 Championship, and ended the year ranked No. 15 in NJCAA Division II. The Mill Valley product recorded two goals—including one game-winner—and one assist, while anchoring a defensive unit that produced eight shutouts, leading the conference and ranking 13th nationally. The Cavaliers also posted a 1.36 goals-against average. In addition to All-America honors, Drummond earned first-team All-Kansas Jayhawk Conference Division II and All-Region 6 recognition for his performance in 2025.

 

NJCAA Player/Goalkeeper of the Week (15)

Michael Shadfar • Week 4 • October 1, 2008

Michael Shadfar was selected the NJCAA Men’s Soccer Division I Player of the Week for Oct. 1, 2008. Shadfar is the first player in JCCC history to earn this honor.  Shadfar led the Cavaliers to two victories during the week he was honored. On Sept. 25, 2008, Shadfar netted the game’s second and third goals to secure a 5-1 win over Neosho County. Two days later, he scored 58 seconds into overtime to give the Cavaliers a 3-2 victory over No. 8 Garden City. He was also credited with an assist earlier in the game.

Mark Saxby • Week 5 • October 14, 2009

Mark Saxby, a sophomore goalkeeper for JCCC, was selected the NJCAA Men’s Soccer Division I Goalkeeper of the week for Oct. 14, 2009.  He became the second player and first goalie to earn this honor.  Saxby led JCCC to a pair victories with his outstanding performance in the net.  He helped JCCC to a 3-1 win over No. 8 Garden City and a 2-1 win over No. 10 Barton County.  Saxby made 19 saves off 21 shots in the two games.  

Guillermo Aguilar • Week 2 • Sept. 2, 2012

Freshman goalkeeper Guillermo Aguilar was credited with three road victories including a shutout at Kishwaukee, to garner NJCAA D-I Goalkeeper of the Week honors in the second week of the 2012 season. He saved 11 of 13 shots on goal he faced in the three matches. He is the third player in team history to earn national honors, and second goalkeeper.

Jorge Rivero • Week 6 and 11 • Sept. 29 and Nov. 3, 2013

Freshman forward Jorge Rivero became the first JCCC player to be selected the NJCAA D-I Player of the Week twice. He earned his first honor in week six after scoring 10 points on four goals and two assists on the week. His second came in week 11 after scoring two goals, including the game-winner, in a 2-1 win over Allen in the Region VI playoffs. 

Trae Hunjak • Week 1 • Aug. 24, 2014

Freshman Trae Hunjak scored JCCC’s first two goals in a 3-2 win over Lincoln Land in the 2015 season opener for both squads. The next day he provided the game winning assist in the final minute to give JCCC a 3-2 win over Marshalltown. 

Edgar Valiente • Week 3 • Sept. 11, 2016

Sophomore midfielder Edgar Valiente played a part in 10 of JCCC’s 12 goals in the Cavaliers’ three games during the week of Sept. 5-11. He two goals and two assists in a 6-2 home win over Kansas City Kansas on Sept. 6. He provided the assist on JCCC’s only goal in a neutral site loss to Lewis & Clark on Sept. 9, and he had two goals and three assists in the Cavaliers 5-2 win at Southwestern Illinois Sept. 11. His first goal against KCK proved to be the game winner, and his second assist against SWIC led to the game winning goal.

Caleb Cothrin • Week 6 • Oct. 2, 2016

Sophomore goalkeeper Caleb Cothrin stopped all 10 shots he faced against Cowley, helping preserve a 1-0 conference victory for the Cavaliers. That performance earned him conference and national Goalkeeper of the Week honors Sept. 26-Oct. 2.

Pedro Ivaskowski • Week 4 • Sept. 22, 2019

In his only action of the week, sophomore goalkeeper Pedro Ivaskowski held No. 13-ranked Cowley scoreless in 110:00 mintues, which resulted in a 0-0 double overtime tie. This was his second shutout of the seaosn.

Pedro Ivaskowski • Week 10 • October 27, 2019

Sophonmore goalkeeper Pedro Ivaskowski earned his second national goalkeeper of the week honor after he registered eight of his nine saves in the second half of a 1-0 victory over Dodge City in the first round of the Region VI playoffs. The shutout was the fifth of the season, which ranked him tied for second in the conference.

Cole Stewart • Week • Sept. 6, 2022

In his first action of the season, sophomore goalkeeper Cole Stewart saved nine of the 10 shots he faced last week to finish 1-1-0. He opened the week falling 1-0 to Coffeyville and capped the week with a 7-0 shutout over Southwestern Illinois.

Sophomore goalkeeper Cole Stewart saved seven of the eight shots he faced last week to help preserve a 3-1 home victory over Neosho County to earn NJCAA Goalkeeper of the Week for a second time in 2022.

Sophomore goalkeeper Cole Stewart stopped 10 of the 11 shots he faced to help preserve a 2-1 victory over Dodge City in the first round of the Plains District Tournament.  That effort earned him NJCAA Goalkeeper of the Week for week 10. He also became the first player in team history to be selected national player/goalkeeper of the week three times in one season.

Alan Lopez • Week 10 • Nov. 1, 2022

Sophomore forward Alan Lopez netted three goals, two which were game winners, to lead JCCC to a pair of victories to earn the final Player of the Week honor for the 2022 season. Lopez opened the week with a game winning goal in a 2-1 win at No. 5 Barton which clinched a tie for the Kansas Jayhawk Conference East Division title for the Cavaliers, their sixth all-time. He capped the week scoring both goals in a 2-1 win over Dodge City to punch JCCC’s ticket to the semifinals of the Plains District Tournament.  

Sergio Hernandez Marques • Week 2 • Sept. 7, 2025

Sergio Hernandez Marquez was a key offensive weapon for the Cavaliers in week 2. The freshman forward netted two goals, including the game winner, in 3-0 road victory over Metropolitan last Wednesday night. He followed with another two-goal effort, highlighted by a second consecutive game winner, in a 5-0 home victory over North Iowa Area.

Daniel Wozniak • Week 2 • Sept. 7, 2025

Freshman Daniel  Wozniak improved to 3-1-0 and lowered his goals against average to 0.75 after posting a pair of shutout victories over the weekend. On Friday night,  Wozniak saved three shots as the Cavaliers cruised to a 5-0 victory over North Iowa Area. On Sunday he thwarted all 10 shots he faced, eight in the second half, to secure a 1-0 victory over No.3-ranked Iowa Lakes.
