Chappell to receive award from Missouri Sports HOF

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Missouri Sports Hall of Fame announced last week that former Glendale High School and Missouri State University basketball standout and current Johnson County Community College head men's basketball coach Rand Chappell will be among a group of individuals to receive the Filbert Five Awards. The basketball luncheon presented by Price Cutter Supermarkets is set for 11 a.m., on Tuesday, December 13 at the Oasis Hotel & Convention Center in Springfield, Mo.

The awards - named in honor of the late Gary Filbert, a Missouri sports legend who was a successful basketball coach assisting legendary Missouri Tigers coach Norm Stewart and later founding the Show-Me State Games – honor former high school, college and professional standouts who made positive impacts on the game.

Chappell played basketball and baseball at Glendale, earning two All-State selections in basketball. He scored more than 1,500 points and graduated as the all-time leading scorer in Falcons history. He later played both sports at Missouri State University (1981-85) and then was a graduate assistant coach for the 1987 and 1988 teams that reached the NCAA Tournament.

Chappell is currently in his third season as the head coach of the JCCC men's basketball program. Off to a 3-1 start this year, Chappell has a record of 47-11 with a conference and region title in 2021 and a trip to the NJCAA D-II National Tournament.

For his career, Chappell has amassed over 400 victories with stops at Labette Community College, Phillips University, Henderson State University, University of Central Arkansas and Garden City Community College. He led Labette two back-to-back Independent Tournament championships. He produced five consecutive 20-win seasons at Henderson State, helping the Reddies to four Gulf Coast South Conference Tournament championships, and five NCAA Tournament appearances. At Phillips, the team was No. 1 in 1988 and played in the national tournament in 1997 and 1998. At Central Arkansas, Chappell won 104 games in seven seasons and he helped the Bears transition from NCAA Division II to the Division I.

Others receiving the Filbert Five Awards are Dr. Kirt Harzler (Willard HS/Evangel University), Rick Pickren (Grandview HS/Valparaiso University/Eastern New Mexico University/Continental Basketball Association), Korry Tillery (Parkview HS/Drury University/Evangel University) and Sam Pugh (Branson HS/Pittsburg State University).
