JCCC men’s basketball storms back to avoid upset at KCKCC

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College men's basketball team absorbed an early blow, faced its largest halftime deficit of the season, and still found a way to win.

The third-ranked Cavaliers used two key second-half runs to rally past Kansas City Kansas Community College for a 61-57 victory at the KCKCC Field House.

Trailing 33-22 at the break, Johnson County stormed back to tie the game at 36 just 4:30 into the second half. The Blue Devils regained control and built a seven-point lead with just under six minutes remaining, but the Cavaliers responded with a furious late rally.

Johnson County closed the game on a 15-4 run to remain undefeated at 25-0 and maintain its two-game lead atop the KJCCC Division II standings.

Sophomore guard Gavin Havey delivered the go-ahead moment, knocking down a 3-pointer with 42 seconds remaining to propel the Cavaliers to the win. Havey led all scorers with 16 points, shooting 6-of-14 from the field, including two 3-pointers, and adding a pair of free throws.

Sophomore forward Tavian Cruse moved within one of the program's career double-double record, recording his 29th career double-double with 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Aidan Wing went a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line to finish with 15 points and eight rebounds.

Freshman guard Trey Fulcher added six points and nine rebounds, while freshman guard Jordan Mason made his first start of the season and contributed five points.

Despite being held to a season-low 22 points in the first half, Johnson County shot 40.7 percent from the field compared to 34.4 percent for KCKCC and outrebounded the Blue Devils 38-34.

Kansas City Kansas was led by Darren McHenry with 14 points, followed by Ta'Veaion Washington with 11.

The Cavaliers continue conference play on Saturday, February 14, when they travel to Labette Community College.
